BikeTag runs June 1st-29th!
Bike Tag works like this: Anyone who can access biketag.org to post photos can play. 1) Any player begins the game by finding the “mystery location” picture posted on BikeTag.org. 2) Next they must prove that they found the mystery location by taking a “proof photo” at the same location. 3) Then they must ride to a new “mystery location” and both post a picture of that new location along with the proof photo. 4) The game moves to another round as soon as a new player is able to find the new mystery location. This game runs all month long! At the end of the month there is a group ride to some of the best mystery tag locations, and prizes will be given for some things we haven’t quite decided yet... See biketag.org for more tips and full rules. Tag!

Come have donuts with the PDX Cargo Bike Gang! This is a meet-up, NOT A RIDE. We won't charge you anything, but Blue Star won't be giving donuts away for free so bring $$. Our donut meet-ups are a time to hang out and chat with people beyond The Helmet Conversation and You Put Your Children on a Your Bike?!? Most of our meet-ups are during the day so this is a chance to see rigs and talk to cargo bikers before the workday starts (and in SW Portland). We'd love to see you there!

The MTB Dream of the 90s is alive in Portland! Imagine it's 1998, and Gateway Green just opened. Just think of how great the PDX MTB scene will be by 2018! I bet there'll even be MTB trails in Forest Park! Tighten up those bar ends and ride your '98 or older MTB on over to Gateway Green. We'll meetup, do a lap or two, maybe try some sweet jumps, and then have a cold beverage and talk about all things 90s MTB. The Gateway Green MTB festival is happening at the same time, so bring the kids and get your rad mom/dad on. Extra points for functioning flex stems and Maguras. Full suspension? Disc brakes?! Carbon??!! Yeah, right, that's all just a fad.

We will show you how to use the Bike Fun Library, which offers mobile sound systems, disco ball, ride leader sashes, and more that you can borrow in the same way you borrow books. Experienced ride leader, Shelly Garteiz, will answer questions on how to welcome women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups, handle confrontations with drivers, plan routes, and ride safely. We will then go on a looping ride, and come back to critique the ride. You can share your ideas for rides and receive feedback from others in the group.

Or, where did those tracks under the Hawthorne Bridge viaduct go? And what about our cable car? Come to find all this out, and more! Ride not a loop but will end near transit and food/beverages. Presented in conjunction with Dan Haneckow of Cafe Unknown.

Be ready to ride at 6:30!
Because it's Wednesday, the weather's great and we miss your smiling faces. Let's get out and ride. Meet at the Sandy Ridge Trailhead at 6:30 and be ready to ride. Depending on turnout, we may break up into groups based on the kind of ride we're looking for. The plan is to be back at the trailhead before dark, but you'll want to bring a light just in case. If you need a lift out there, put a shout out on the FB event page.

Meet at 9pm ride at 9:30pm
Night riding is one of the most fun aspects of cycling, and one that a lot of riders haven't really explored. We're here to encourage you to stay up late! During the day, the Leif Erikson trail is full of people, filled with sunshine, and exudes a friendly park like atmosphere. At night, by contrast the canopy of trees lends a cavernous, spooky feeling to the trail. Come experience another side of one of Portland's best urban offroad trails.

Take a ride down nostalgia lane by reliving the joy of standing on a street corner waiting for the school bus to arrive. Like a school bus, we'll make brief scheduled stops as we cycle through Portland's Central City, picking up lunchtime riders and dropping them off as they complete the loop back to work. You can also ride from the start all the way to the end, or wait for us anywhere along the route and join up as we roll by! Program starts at 5:30pm and Funeral Procession departs at 6:00pm
This ride is to call attention to traffic fatalities in Oregon and ask the question: With traffic fatalities in Oregon and specifically in Portland still increasing each year, Is Vision Zero really working? We will meet at Portland City Hall for a rally followed by a slow, somber walk down 4th Ave. to ODOT headquarters. A short rally at ODOT will conclude with more upbeat music to start the bike ride off to hopefully a safer happier future. Suggested attire: Black or black and white. All brass, woodwind and percussion musicians welcome for the slow walk, rallies and "Second Line". Please contact for song set list and if you would like to rehearse.

Think you’re fast on your carbon track bike or aluminum road bike? Come out for a night of sprints and chill with friends watching or riding an alley cat sprint race while dressed in your sexiest ‘drag’ attire, or however you want to dress or not dress! Gold sprints are great for getting numbers on papers but sprinting on a bike not stationary is truly a much better race in showing cyclists skills! This years Friday and Saturday Night Drags will be safer than last years! But it will still be just as fun for spectators to watch and help out on the race. Typically depending on how many people come out, there will be a few sprints then we ride to meet up with the MMR for more cycling shenanigans!

From there, we'll take a short ride to a nearby bar/brewery, followed by another park for more Knockout. Everyone is welcomed. We had a truly spectacular crowd last year, and we even experimented with three-ball Knockout. It is barely hyperbolic to say that our lives are forever changed by giving that a whirl. The activities will end at a food cart pod, where you'll refuel and have another drink. I'm looking to have the route be BikeTown accessible, so if you or a friend don't own a bike you'll still be able to join.

This ride will roll to a trailhead, then dismount to hike a trail up to the top of one of Portland's peaks, where we'll hang to enjoy the view for a little bit before bombing the hill back in the saddle. Little to no cargo on bike makes hiking with it easier, and it makes for excellent upper body training. Parking bike at trailhead is a good way to lose your bike, and I don't usually hike in a loop. Taking my bike along allows me to just continue with rolling when done hiking, instead of having to hike back to a parking lot or trailhead.

Back for its 8th year, Get Lost! is a Pedalpalooza Bike Ride led entirely by chance. Dice are rolled to determine how many blocks to ride, and which direction to turn once we get there (odd total = R, even =L). We ride until we find a natural end point. Feel free to bail whenever you wanna go somewhere else. You never know what to expect. Since we won't be taking designated bike routes riders should be pretty comfortable in semi-hairy conditions, but dangerous or illegal routes will not be traveled. Probably not a loop, but that's what we said the first year, and we (eerily) ended up in the exact place we started! Read about that year's ride here: http://bit.ly/2qY2TmQ

Everyone knows that Portland is home to Powell's, the biggest independent new and used bookstore in the world! But Powell's is only one of a city teeming with bookstores: the weird, the quaint, the highly specialized, the downright creepy. We'll ride to several, stopping to browse and tell stories about the encounters we've had in their stacks. We'll bring along a writer or two; maybe we'll be lucky and find some of our own books shelved among the worn paperbacks and the self-help classics. Ride of about 8-10 miles with several stops. Not a loop.

Willamette Park, 6805 SW Macadam Ave, Portland, OR 97219
Meet at the picnic structure near the South end of Willamette Park.
Tom Howe
Fri, Jun 15, 2018, 5:30 PM
There's a preliminary proposal to build a new pedestrian bridge over the Willamette connecting Lake Oswego with the unincorporated areas of Oak Grove and Jennings Lodge on the other side of the river. This means a cyclist would only have a 1 mile ride from the nearby Trolley Trail to downtown Lake Oswego, compared to about 11 miles of pedaling using the Sellwood or Oregon City bridges. This ride goes to a likely landing spot for the bridge on the East side of the river and explores a couple different ways to get there from the Trolley Trail. We'll meet at the picnic structure near the South end of Willamette Park. The out-and-back ride is 5.5 miles one way with 80% of the distance on 3 separated bike trails and the rest on quiet streets.

TGIF Bike Tours of Portland's Green Infrastructure is a series of NPSO tours helping folks appreciate Portland's sustainable stormwater facilities. This is the third tour. To start this tour we'll talk about the Willamette River -- the focus of so much of Portland's sustainable stormwater efforts. Then we'll see green walls and green roofs and rainwater art and porous pavement. We'll see a variety of stormwater planters and rain gardens--and talk about the difference between the two as well as the whole Tabor to the River project. Please review this Bureau of Environmental Services brochure first: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/461343 We'll only be doing from the (#14) Hawthorne Hostel to the (#21) 12th & Clay Green Street, but we'll also catch some newer installations installed since the brochure was printed. Please come with your tires fully pumped up and your bike well-tuned; dress in quick-drying layers and preferably a bright, highly visible outer layer. Wear a helmet and bring a well-equipped bike with front and rear lights, water bottle and lock. Bring money for dinner if you would like to have an inexpensive meal together afterward. Oh, and bring a name tag. My contact info will be in the question where I will expect you to give me yours. If you can't make it by 5:30, but want to come, please take my cell number and we'll let you know where you can catch up with us.

But David Bowie's is in January (1/8/1947) which means only the most Hard-Core Bowie Fans and Cyclist brave the icy temperatures, rain, wind (& even the many inches of snow we had on his 70th Birthday!) We're constantly asked, "What about a Bowie Ride? Please just have one when it is nice out/during Pedalpalooza!", so here ya go! It'll be a short, easy ride around & down to Col. This is my favorite route in Portland to take while on a wander with friends, embarking from the NE region of Portland, and heading into the great unknown on my favorite meandering of bicycle routes. If you want a mysterious night ride that does more riding than stopping, this is the ride for you! Length: 21 miles Lights: Yes! Helmets: Highly Recommended (We may/may not ride through Vancouver - tall bike riders may encounter difficulty with this ride due to tricky bridge crossings) Terrain: mostly flat, 1-3 very short steep hills depending on your definition of hills, beer?: If you'd like, NOT required. The route is a linear loop, bail options are limited. One ~12 minute break at a neat spot in the middle. This ride is inclusive to all.

The NEW Spring Garden Park is complete and the Grand Opening is this Saturday! Here is the link to the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/201757090611390/ With Spring Garden Park being in SW inevitably the masses will drive to the event, but we'd like to showcase a safe route for people including kids to arrive by bike from the East Side. This will be a no drop ride and kids are welcome, but there will be some climbing (807 feet) over the 6.1 mile route so be prepared. I can assure you if you don't live in SW you will not know the adventure and beauty of identifying safe routes. Here is the route: https://goo.gl/maps/2EKBBK69tvF2

The Pedalpalooza sing-a-long bike ride is back for 2018, this time for The Wizard of Oz. We'll be riding a loop route of about 6 miles, making stops at several parks to sing to the songs from the movie with the help of a mobile audio/video system. Song lyrics will be provided on printed sheets, and all singing abilities are welcome! We don't watch the entire movie, only the half-hour or so of scenes that contain singing. If you like, come dressed as your favorite character from the movie!

This is going to be a fun, somewhat long, ride up into the Silver Star area to ride some non-technical gravel (like Leif Erikson level of difficulty). 60 miles, 4000 feet. We're going to ride very slow and stick together. The focus is meeting new friends, and enjoying the spectacular scenery of the area. We'll probably be out all day, but I promise you it will be worth it. The Lost Horizon Club is a group that's interested in the intersection of bike-fun and adventure riding. I assure you, this ride will be both fun and an adventure! Link to route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27401127 Edit: I had the wrong route up before now. It should be 61 miles not 88 ;)

Sat, Jun 16, 2018, 4:00 PM
Meet up at 4pm. Ride to begin around 4:15.
During the summer of 2018, the Springwater Corridor will be closed at Oaks Bottom for a major construction project. The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, are working together on a large-scale habitat enhancement project that benefits wildlife in the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. The project will replace an old small culvert with a large new open bottom culvert. This will improve hydrology and habitat for protected wildlife species, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, bats and salmon. Right now, migrating salmon cannot safely access Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge on their journey to and from the Pacific Ocean because an existing culvert and water control structure blocks fish access into the refuge. This project will open up the connection between Oaks Bottom and the river for the first time in decades, making it possible for juvenile salmon to return to the wildlife refuge. This ride will show you some potential alternate routes to take during the closure of the Springwater between July 1st and October 31st of 2018. The ride will meet at the southeast corner of Brooklyn City Park (the corner of SE Milwaukee and SE Haig). It will head south on 17th, and then connect to the new 19th Avenue Greenway. The ride will cross the Sellwood Bridge, and head north on the Willamette greenway. It will cross back over to the east side on the Tilikum bridge before ending at the Apex beer garden on SE 12th and Division. This ride is intended for people who are comfortable riding in bike lanes and on Neighborhood Greenways. It is approximately 10 miles in length and should take about 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace. Please note: this ride is not an official City of Portland event.

Riding in protest of the pavement allocation status quo, we demand more space for people, less space for machines! Four-lane roads create too many distractions for drivers and impede visibility. Crossing four-lane roads as a pedestrian or cyclist, even legally, is hazardous. The extra lanes should be used for bike lanes, bus-only lanes, parklets, wider sidewalks, anything but vehicle lanes. No more four-lane roads! This ride is not for children and first-time cyclists; we will ride safely, but will be taking the lane on major arterial streets during rush hour. Be there at 5pm to make signs. Sign making supplies will be provided.

Northwest Trail Alliance
Wed, Jun 20, 2018, 6:00 PM
Be ready to ride at 6.
Did you know that Portland has mountain bike trails IN TOWN? The Gateway Green MTB system is located off the I-205 bike path just north of the Gateway Transit Center. Will Heiberg (owner of the Lumberyard bike park) and his son Wyatt will be leading FREE rides each Wednesday in June out to Gateway Green. These rides are designed to introduce you to Gateway Green, help you get comfortable with off-road riding and will include tips and tricks to navigating the courses. Meet in the Lumberyard parking lot and ride to Gateway Green as a group. Ride leaves promptly at 6. Please RSVP on the Facebook event page so they know how many folks to expect. https://www.facebook.com/events/181329535911425/ If you do not have an off-road bike, loaners are available from the Lumberyard for rent. The small rental fee goes toward maintaining the rental fleet to ensure it remains available to the community and is not a revenue source for the Lumberyard. Send inquiries about rental bikes to info@lumberyardmtb.com with "Rental for Newbie Night at Gateway Green" as the subject line. The Northwest Trail Alliance is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon. We build and maintain Gateway Green and are excited about the time Will and his son are donating to the community to ensure that folks can enter the sport of mountain biking safely.

Sarah Gilbert
Thu, Jun 21, 2018, 10:30 AM
Media stuff at 10:30, ride at 11:15 a.m.
Bicycle Airport Express (BAX) is *not* launching! The Port of Portland is still working out what sort of permit might be required to start a bike tour at the airport. No one knows so we can't launch! So we're not launching with a bike ride. BAX is the only service of its kind in the world: ride from [at or near] the airport to your downtown accommodation in the style to which Portland is accustomed: by bicycle. If customers like, they may tote their own luggage; or we’ll happily transport it by cargo bike for our guests. Our service includes both bicycle and guide. Our guide will meet guests [at or near] the airport with two cargo bikes: one for the traveler and one for the guide. The guide can tote the luggage, or if the guest prefers, the guide can help load it on the traveler's bike. The ride into the city is one of the most beautiful urban bike rides in the world, a journey that truly spans Portland’s geography, neighborhoods, and history, along the two major rivers that shaped our city, past sloughs, Gothic bridges, quiet neighborhoods and parks in which the Douglas-firs and hemlocks tower. The NOT launch event will [not include any of this: goodies and photo ops (maybe we'll perform some feats of strength) in the spirit of organizer and company founder Sarah Gilbert's "Yes I can fit it on my bike" Pedalpalooza event from 2014]. Bring your cargo bike or your luggage; ride with us the whole way (10-13 miles) or just ride along for the pretty part along the river. The whole ride will take about four hours. We'll bring snacks!

Ride at roughly 11:30a. I'll be there at 11:00
PLEASE NOTE LAST MINUTE CHANGE TO LOCATION. WE WILL STILL RIDE TO SUNDAY PARKWAYS. BRUNCH ON THE BLUFFS WAS EITHER DELETED OR A FEVER DREAM. I WILL NOT BE PROVIDING BRUNCH. Put a wind chime on your bike and come to this ride! It's fun to ride a bike with a wind chime on it. Gathering will begin at Brunch on the Bluffs, because it sounds dope and I want to go to that too. I will be the one with the wind chime on my bike. I will have a small number of chimes to distribute. Our ride will begin after brunch has been consumed and all riders are confirmed to have safe, secure chimes. Probably around 11:30, but like don't worry about it too much. We will enjoy some time on quiet streets, where we can be ourselves, in the majesty of our chimes, before joining Sunday Parkways to end at the Bike Decoration Station. It's a mild, minor affair glommed onto other, better planned events. Putting a wind chime on my bike has made me very happy, and I encourage you to try it.

Under 9 miles long, but lots of stops with color commentary to show off hidden (and obvious) gems and natural (and unnatural) history.

Meet at 5:30; ride at 6!
Ride with us to learn about Portland's illustrious history of community opposition to freeway expansion. We'll start in Southeast Portland's Piccolo Park (originally bulldozed to make way for the Mt Hood Freeway!) and swing through town to see the scars left in the inner city from freeway expansion. We'll conclude near the Rose Quarter, where ODOT keeps trying to spend half a billion dollars on freeway expansion despite the fact that it's, you know, 2018, and that any sensible investment in our region's transportation system considerate of public health, equity, carbon emissions or congestion relief involves more transit, biking and walking instead of lanes of freeway.
