During the summer of 2018, the Springwater Corridor will be closed at Oaks Bottom for a major construction project. The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, are working together on a large-scale habitat enhancement project that benefits wildlife in the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. The project will replace an old small culvert with a large new open bottom culvert. This will improve hydrology and habitat for protected wildlife species, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, bats and salmon. Right now, migrating salmon cannot safely access Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge on their journey to and from the Pacific Ocean because an existing culvert and water control structure blocks fish access into the refuge. This project will open up the connection between Oaks Bottom and the river for the first time in decades, making it possible for juvenile salmon to return to the wildlife refuge. This ride will show you some potential alternate routes to take during the closure of the Springwater between July 1st and October 31st of 2018. The ride will meet at the southeast corner of Brooklyn City Park (the corner of SE Milwaukee and SE Haig). It will head south on 17th, and then connect to the new 19th Avenue Greenway. The ride will cross the Sellwood Bridge, and head north on the Willamette greenway. It will cross back over to the east side on the Tilikum bridge before ending at the Apex beer garden on SE 12th and Division. This ride is intended for people who are comfortable riding in bike lanes and on Neighborhood Greenways. It is approximately 10 miles in length and should take about 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace. Please note: this ride is not an official City of Portland event.
