Meet at 5:45, ride at 6:00pm sharp, so we can arrive by 6:30 to watch the birds and picnic. We will return after sunset (7:20pm) and be back around 8pm
8:00 PM
Ride is a loop
Every September over 10,000 Vaux’s Swifts fly overhead as they prepare to roost for the night in the chimney at Chapman Elementary. Swift watching is popular, some days more than 2000 people gather to watch the birds perform their aerial acrobats We’ll ride from the Jamison Square in the Pearl District to Chapman Elementary on neighborhood greenways, then watch the birds till sunset, while having a picnic dinner. Bring your own picnic! The ride is a 1.5 miles one-way and a 3 mile loop total. If you need help getting back to the east side of the river, some of us will be heading to Northeast afterward. We ride slow for little pedalers. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to ride in a straight line, start and stop. Cargo bikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great for kids who haven’t learned to pedal or get tired soon. This ride will end after sunset, so front headlights are required for all bikes making the ride back, especially kids’ bikes. We'll ride together as a group, because kids are traffic too!
