Portland’s radical history comes alive in this ride, stretching from downtown into north Portland at a leisurely pace with stops at key landmarks. The ride follows a route pioneered by the late Kim Fern in her 2002 Portland Radical History Bike Tour zine. The ride will honor Kim Fern and Michael Munk (Portland Red Guide) who did much to bring this history to light over the last 20 years. Prominent events like the 1913 Oregon Packing Company Strike and 1934 Longshoreman’s Strike will be profiled. Key figures and organizations will come into our story: Tom Burns, John Reed, Louise Bryant, Marie Equi, Dirk DeJonge, CES Wood, Ruth Barnett, Julie Ruutilla, and Kent Ford; as well as the Industrial Workers of the World, Black Panther Party, and Portland Red Squad.
