Bike the Levees is a tour of Portland's hidden flood protection system, and the silenced histories of the Vanport Flood of 1948. Did you know there are 27-miles of levees along the lower Columbia River? These levees reduce the risk of flooding for tens of thousands of jobs and households, places of cultural and historical significance, and hundreds of acres of parks and natural areas. Bike the Levees is a unique opportunity to learn about this hidden infrastructure, as well as the History of the Vanport Flood of 1948 – a tragic event that displaces thousands of residents. Learn how partners are working together to improve the flood protection system and reduce the risk of catastrophic flood events in the future.
