What if…Portland built all the freeways it planned? This ride follows the routes of several highways that never made it off the drawing board, such as the fabled Mt. Hood Freeway, some that did but were later removed, like Harbor Drive, and also as a reference some freeways that currently exist. We’ll see the parallels of the past freeway fights with what’s going on with current and future projects. At the end, we’ll have the opportunity to stop for food/drinks and more discussion. BONUS: Show up at Wallace Park at 9 AM for this week's PDX Coffee Outside. BYO coffee, either in a thermos/mug, or make it at the park with a camping stove.

This BikeLoud PDX affiliated ride uses the 20s and 30s greenways to visit the annual Fremont Fest Marketplace. Fremont Fest has over 150 vendors along a closed section of NE Fremont Street. This year the fest has an 80s theme to honor the 40th anniversary of the Beaumont Business Association sponsoring it. Neon colors, shoulder pads, and even leg warmers are encouraged! BikeLoud PDX hosts many rides throughout the year to encourage people to meet each other, bike more, learn, and have fun. Our volunteer committees follow policy and address best practices in infrastructure to help Portland meet its 25% goal of trips by bike. Hope to see you on the ride! Meet at 1:15pm, ride at 1:30pm
3:45 PM
Ride is a loop
Beat the heat by riding to fountains and splash pads with other kids and families as part of Kidical Mass PDX! We will ride from Jamison Square in NW on this free, family-friendly, kid-paced bike ride. We’ll start at the Jamison Square fountain at 1pm, and ride around central Portland to 3 other fountains where kids and grown-ups can splash around. August 3rd it often the warmest day of the year, so this will be a great time to beat the heat by celebrating our downtown interactive fountains. Meet at 1:15pm, ride at 1:30pm. The ride is a loop. It's just one mile to the second fountain at Director Park and the next two are each a half mile apart on the waterfront, and then it is 1.5 miles back to the start for a total loop of 3.5 miles, so it is suitable for most young bike riders who can pedal their own bike without training wheels. Bring swimwear, sunscreen and water! We should be back around 4 pm. We will ride at a slow pace for little pedalers and parents on cargo bikes. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to balance and pedal in a straight line, start and stop. Cargo bikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great for kids who haven’t learned to pedal. Adult corkers are welcome to join as a traffic safety superheroes. We’ll ride together as a group, no matter the weather, because kids are traffic too! Shady ride on Leif Erikson Trail in Forest Park. One of Portland's true gems, this ride will be reasonably cool and pleasant even if the air temperature is 100 degrees. (We've done it several times). Forest Park was saved from developers in the 1950s and 60s. We'll celebrate Portland's activists heroes that brought us this park, and protest the lack of greenspace elsewhere in the city. Many people can ride this with skinny tire bikes, it's a well maintained gravel road. We'll do a 30 minute snack stop at a nice shade spot on the trail. Ends at Pittsburg Beach, a secluded swimming beach just upriver from Cathedral Park

Climate Change is making Portland summer nights almost unbearable. In the past, the air would cool at night. Providing refreshing respite from the heat. And allowing homes to cool off. Now the nights are routinely hot. We'll protest the lack of response by local and global leaders with a lighthearted protest ride. We'll stop at government agencies and call for decreases in greenhouse gas emissions. Also fossil fuel companies. Come roll around Portland and enjoy comfort in the only way possible -- bicycling naked! Bring signs and body paint if you have them!
