UPDATED A Melody from a Past Life Keeps Pulling Me Back
Kylie and Jason
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 6:30 PM
Meet at 6.30pm and ride at 7pm sharp.
End location: 44:43 minutes from the start
*** Ride rescheduled 23 days from August 23rd which was the anniversary of them setting fire to a million pounds. It was too hot (the weather and the money) *** The KLF are the Banksys (before Banksy was a thing) of the music world. In 1991 they were the biggest-selling singles act on the planet. They created The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way). They collaborated with the first lady of country Tammy Wynette. They deleted their back catalogue. One August 23rd, at the height of their success in 1990s Britain, they went to Jura, Scotland, and set fire to a million pounds. The band's 1990 ambient album Chill Out (released by Wax Trax in the US) is one of the most beautiful and etheric pieces of music in existence, recorded in a continuous 44:43 minute live take. Taking the form of a road trip through the USA, soundscapes paint landscapes of rolling trains and fields, sunrises and sunsets, hopes raised, dreams dashed and wishes yet to be fulfilled. A soundtrack for the soul's movie, it's dotted with birds whistling, sheep bleating and a touch of Tuvan throat singing. Flashes of news reports, commercials and preachers also feature. Samples used are from Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen and Acker Bilk. We'll ride our bikes beside the train tracks, through industrial areas, by drive-thrus and gas stations and ice cream shops, past street art, under trees and along the river as we listen to this spirited slice of aural heaven, and record our own continuous 44:43 minute live take of the ride itself. Ride time is 44 minutes 43 seconds. Stay on at our final stop for KLF jams and creativity. More ride and route info to come, but we'll be justified and ancient as we roam the (Port)land all bound for Mu Mu land. At the start we'll have info about and messages from The KLF, who've given their blessing to the ride. Who knows, they make take over leading it in a manner as they deem fit. Suggestions for the ride: - Dress as a sheep to mimic the Chill Out album's bucolic cover. - Turn your bike into an ice cream van. - Wear a Queen of the South FC shirt or a smiley face or some KLF 2323 World Tour merch. - Decorate your bike with daffodils. - Bring along a copy of How to Be an Artist by William Ernest Drummond. - Bring along a Jimmy Cauty Lord of The Rings poster. - Bake a cake for someone on the ride with a note attached: "I have baked you a cake, here it is." After the ride is done we'll play more of The KLF's jams (DJs TBC) to dance to, and for anyone who wants to: - We'll record you speaking one sentence about the emotions and evocations that emerged within you while listening and riding along to Chill Out. We'll gift this as an audio file to Bill Drummond (along with a red, blue, yellow, black or white knitted square containing one thousand stitches (40 rows of 25 stitches)), and Jimmy Cauty. - Bring your own art supplies so we can all create something inspired by Chill Out at the end of the ride. We'll compile these into a book and gift it to Bill Drummond (along with a red, blue, yellow, black or white knitted square containing one thousand stitches (40 rows of 25 stitches)), and Jimmy Cauty. - Show us an item of yours that embodies 'what art is' to you. We'll photograph these and gift the composite image to Bill Drummond (along with a red, blue, yellow, black or white knitted square containing one thousand stitches (40 rows of 25 stitches)), and Jimmy Cauty. After this, we'll play KLF jams and other of-the-era house/trance/rave jams for anyone who wants to dance! America: What Time Is Love? It's when this ride takes place.

Ride at 7:30
Ride is a loop
End location: Ride is always a loop
Our instagram is nakedHeartspdx so you can see how we ride. Weekly themed rides. Different ride leaders each week, but you can expect the ride to be social paced (8ish mph), no-drop, safe and welcoming, store stop with safe clean bathroom access and the ride is always a loop. We practice consent and non-violence specially with car interactions, what one ride does affects how all rides get treated. The Mellow Mondays are a space for (new) ride leaders to try out ideas in a very supported environment. You’ll often see Mondays rides appearing again during the warmer riding season. We follow the shift code of conduct and expect everyone to be respectful of themselves and others around them. This is so we can actually relax and have fun and connect with each other in a softer space. This isn’t a sober ride but we ask for moderation to keep the atmosphere relaxed. We recommend Abraham Fixes bikes in N Williams and NomadCycles (e-bike specialist) for repairs/sales and parts. Our friends over at RideSafePDX host regular ride and we’ recommend those as a pleasant warm group to ride with.

Meet at 5:05, leave at 5:25
Ride is a loop
End location: Salmom Springs or City hall
I have successfully reserved a 3 minute time slot during the "public comment" at City Hall sept 17th at 6pm. I will be pitching a city ordinance to make idling personal automobiles for longer than 5 minutes a ticketable offense (a non-moving violation in the same class as a parking ticket). Why do you care? Because you breathe in air. And a lot of air. Also because the rumble of idling cars is loud, and because the car idling population could spend thier money in other ways that could benefit the local economy (instead of burning it up out the tailpipe...) This ride is for discussion and to try to create momentum around the proposed city ordinance and to promote awareness of this proposed ordinance, generate a discussion around the idea, and get some good old fashioned excersize on the way home from work. No, you will not have a time slot to speak at the city hall, unless you happened to have signed up months ago, but you will have the chance to support me in my endevor by this bike ride. The ride will have to be very punctual. We'll have to meet at about 5:05 and leave at 5:25, also we'll have to have a decent (fast-ish) pace to the ride. You get bonus points if you wear a tie. Extra bonus points if you wear a suit and tie. Dress apparel for the win!!

Guest leader this week! A word from the leader! “For the route itself, riders should be prepared to do some technical riding, a little hike-a-bike, and be able to lift their bikes over some logs. Bring legs willing to climb and PMA!” Roughly 15 miles and about 1k of climbing. A faster and more adventurous group ride with a no drop mentality! See you there!

TNR #546: Robin Returns
Thursday Night Ride
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 7:00 PM
Meet at 7:00, announcements at 7:30, leave after “Beer Minutes.”
End location: Not a loop, but usually with a fire.
Thursday Night Ride is Portland’s longest-running weekly social ride, riding every Thursday night since 2015! Routes and ride leaders change weekly, but expect an energetic party-paced “rolling dive bar” of a ride for newcomers and regulars alike. Most rides will feature park and store stops, but come prepared to have fun and celebrate cycling together—other wheeled guests should respect the pace and space of cyclists. New leadership, same positive vibes. While you might expect some wheelies and other chaos, riders are expected to follow Shift’s Code of Conduct, and if you’re banned from any Shift rides, TNR isn’t for you. No complaints, just accountability—if your behavior makes others feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please leave the ride before the ride leaves you. Riders should practice consent, accountability, respect, and de-escalation at all times. Stay behind the ride leader and don’t forget to thank a corker! 📍 Salmon Street Springs, every Thursday, rain or shine. 🕖 Meet at 7:00, announcements at 7:30. 🗺️ TNR #545 Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/52627088 ✨Be an Empowered Bystander✨ See something off? Step up in a way that feels right for you: 🗣️ Direct: If it's safe, say *That's Not Right* for TNR. 🎭 Distract: Change the vibe and give them an out 🙋🏽 Delegate: Get help from a ride leader or trusted friend ⏳ Delay: Check in with the person afterwards 📝 Document: Write down what happened
⛲️ If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to get involved, come early and ask for the ride leader—we’ll see you at the fountain!

Meet 7ish. Ride 8 ish.
Find your bike Every Friday Night. We meet at Ladds circle, in the circle. If it is raining, head down to the covered area of Abernethy Elementary School. Ride slowly meets at 7 pm and departs roughly at 7:45/8ish pm. An honorary 3 minutes of Ladd laps (Ding Ding Ride/Ladd500) and then we send it. Sometimes we have guest ride leaders. Friday Night Rides are different every time. Sometimes we go to other rides happening around town during the summer. End of ride fires/good vibes/respect/no jerks/ We are a community. Respect each other! No aggressive, sexist, racist, or any other kind of BS will be tolerated. Violations against the code of conduct will be reported to shift2bikes. If you ride Sur-Ron/powerful electric bikes this is not the ride for you. You can come but you might be heckled. This is a bicycle ride. Bring lights/locks/responsible vibes/a cup/ Casual pace with some extra zip 10-20ish mile rides with store stops/park stops/art stops NOT NECESSARILY A NO DROP RIDE… ESPECIALLY IN THE FALL/WINTER/SPRING. Be careful of slippery roads/leafs on ground/pot holes. Call out road hazards to help bike friends stay safe. 1st Friday is bottle share night. (bottle of wine/crazy beer/kombucha/coconut water/fizzy waters/anything you like to drink/want to share) 2nd Fridays are MMR - later night vibes to make it to Midnight Mystery Ride. If you want to lead a ride just ask! REPEAT… NOT NECESSARILY A NO DROP RIDE… ESPECIALLY IN THE FALL/WINTER/SPRING. Guest ride leaders wanted and appreciated! Instagram @fridaynightride

Sat, Sep 20, 2025, 9:00 AM
Starts at about 9, people roll in and out through around 11
We meet at a different park in Portland every Saturday all year morning at about 9 to talk about home repair, travel plans, obscure board games, insects, etymology and sometimes bikes. Coffee Outside is often a meeting or starting point for adventures, day rides, group food cart rides or other outings. Bring a means to make coffee or some sort of coffee-adjacent beverage, or not. Instant chai? Perfect. A canned coffee beverage from the bodega? Legit. A special small batch blend of beans roasted in your neighborhood roastery that you measure by weight (portable scale, naturally) hand-grind in your titanium grinder before making a slow pour-over using hand-made paper filters and perfect temperature water? Sure, go for it. Baked goods are always appreciated but not at all required. Uniform? Nope. Fancy bike? Nope. Racing or ultra bikepacking chops? Nope. We enthusiastically welcome new faces and have no barrier to entry other than being your authentic self and leaving any bad/aggro attitudes at home. We post the location every Thursday on the PDX Coffee Outside website, which our friend Chris updates, and our Instagram account.
